Clergy Reflections on Spiritually Transformative Experiences

As a priest for 28 years, Stephanie Bradbury has counseled more than a few parishioners who have had Spiritually Transformative Experiences (STEs) and/or Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). Rather than threaten our faith, she says, such experiences actually serve to revitalize it. On Wednesday, February 12, at 7:00 pm Central Time (8:00 pm Eastern Time), she will join us live via Zoom from her home in Massachusetts to relate several of these stories shared with her by regular Christians – including one of her own – and connect them to scripture. Together, we will reflect on how they reaffirm some existing beliefs as well as inspire new ways of thinking about Christianity and religion in general. Bring your curiosity and your questions for Stephanie, and join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking and uplifting evening.

This will be the February regular monthly meeting of the DFW Friends of IANDS, a local group based in North-Central Texas. The group was established by current IANDS President Dr. Jan Holden to serve the needs and interests of people who have had near-death and/or related experiences, or those with a personal or professional interest in such things, and has remained active for almost 30 years.

The event will feature The Reverend Stephanie Bradbury and Dr. Holden, who has studied and published about transpersonal phenomena for many years, in a discussion about the connection between NDEs, STEs and the human religious experience. The meeting will be open to local North Texas members as well as interested participants from around the world, and audience questions are both invited and encouraged. Although IANDS has no religious affiliation, the growing public interest in NDEs and STEs often brings questions about their implications for traditional religion, so we are pleased to have the opportunity to hear from someone like Stephanie whose particular interest in these subjects as a practicing Episcopal priest offers to provide us with a unique and interesting perspective.

The Reverend Stephanie Chase Bradbury received her B.A. from the University of Virginia and her M.Div. from Yale Divinity School. She was ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1996 and has served churches in the States and abroad, currently serving a parish in Massachusetts. Stephanie is an experiencer of a number of STEs herself, beginning at the tender age of six. She has published a book of sermons entitled, “Holy Incarnation! God Said What?” – and writes a Substack newsletter called, “Jesus and the Enchanted Cosmos.” She has spoken at several IANDS conferences and also founded an IANDS sharing group for Christian clergy. Stephanie is drawn to the thin shimmer between matter and spirit, and how life in this world is affected by our connection to the transcendent.
