The suffering caused by the death of a loved one is one of the most painful human experiences. It is also, unfortunately, one of the most common. Just as each person is unique, each loss is unique and each individual’s response to loss is unique. Medical research shows there is no “good” or “bad” way to deal with grief and there are no “better” or “worse” people in the face of suffering as intense.

After a loss, most people experience what is defined as normal grief – a period of intense sadness, numbness, and even guilt or anger. While for many people these feelings gradually relax, for some the feelings of loss are devastating and do not improve with the passage of time. This is called complicated grief – a debilitating condition that requires professional attention.

The question arises: which son of professional attention? The literature seems to seriously question the effectiveness of grief counseling, described as at best ineffective and, at worst, detrimental to clients seeking help. Traditional approaches – for the most part based on the false model of “stages of mourning” – seem to add nothing to the pre-existing resources of individuals, their spontaneous recovery capacities, and the effects of the passage of time.

Moreover, there are at least four so-called “non-traditional” approaches that have repeatedly shown the ability to dramatically decrease and even fully relieve grief. These approaches, developed and tested in medical settings and/or clinical psychology, have one fundamental feature in common: they are based on the assumption that the human personality survives the death of the body.

In his presentation, Dr. Piero Calvi-Parisetti gives a brief overview of the state of research on the effectiveness of traditional methods, and describes context, origin, development, technique and results of the four methods based on the existence of an afterlife.

About Dr. Parisetti

Author of successful books and internationally renowned speaker, Piero Calvi Parisetti is first and foremost a researcher at the Department of Parapsychology at the University of Northampton. A medical doctor specializing in public health, he taught for almost twenty years at various universities in Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. He then devoted himself passionately to the study of the evidence for what he himself calls “the incredible truth”, namely the fact that, in a way that we do not yet understand, the human mind and personality seem to survive the death of the body. A member of the Parapsychological Association, the Society for Psychical Research and the Scientific and Medical Network, Dr. Calvi Parisetti is considered one of the world’s leading experts in the subject of clinical applications of parapsychological research. He lives with his wife in Troon, on the west coast of Scotland.
