Dallas Fort Worth Friends of IANDS presents this live webinar with researcher Dr. Pascal Michael, who has explored the relationship between near-death experiences and what causes them—not through a reductionist approach, but as an effort to better understand consciousness itself.
Among the research he will discuss is his examination of COVID-19-related NDEs, which may reveal distinctive relationships between altered neural functioning, life-threatening ICU contexts, medically induced coma, and visionary experience. Dr. Michael will share a thematic analysis of these accounts, identifying recurrent themes, exceptional content, circumstances, and aftereffects. He will also consider whether they echo the collective crisis of the pandemic, paralleling the messages and visions of other global threats sometimes reported during NDEs.
Joining us live from London, Dr. Michael will share what his latest research may contribute to consciousness science, neurophenomenology, and bereavement meaning-making.
About Pascal
Dr. Pascal Michael is a lecturer and researcher whose work explores near-death experiences and other exceptional human experiences through psychology, neuroscience, and psychedelic research. He received a BSc in Neuroscience and an MSc in Clinical Mental Health Sciences from University College London before completing his PhD in Psychology at the University of Greenwich in 2023. His doctoral research compared the neurophenomenology of psychedelic DMT and related experiences with near-death experiences and included the first field study using DMT.
Dr. Michael has taught at the University of Greenwich and led both the Entheogens module in the Alef Trust’s graduate program in Transpersonal Psychology and its certificate program in Psychedelics, Altered States, and Transpersonal Psychology. His broader research interests include mediumship, precognition, and alien-abduction experiences, informed by psychedelic research and the neurosciences.
He has published more than 20 journal articles and book chapters, including some of the most widely read articles in Frontiers in Psychology. He has presented several times at Breaking Convention and delivered invited talks and keynotes for organizations including the Institute of Psychedelic Therapy. He received the University of Greenwich’s Schmeidler Outstanding Student Award in 2020, was later nominated for its Inspiring Teaching Award, and has been named among the Top 25 Emerging Psychedelic Thinkers.
